Two engines undergoing 10 yr overhaul
The FRT's workhorse 5643 is undergoing its heavy general overhaul. The boiler is now receiving specialist attention in Loughborough, while FRT volunteers work on the motion at the Ribble Steam Railway in Preston. The overhaul was brought forward after the discovery of a broken rivet in the foundation ring which necessitated a boiler lift, as well as a complete retube to address weeping tubes and stays.

Meanwhile major work continues on the boiler from "Cumbria" at the Severn Valley Railway. The Austerity failed witha crack on the firebox tubeplate in summer 2010. This is a major contract requiring the insertion of a new firebox tubeplate and replacement of parts of the outer firebox wrapper.

Our 1863 veteran is preparing to be moved from Locomtion in Shildon to the Ribble Steam Railway, the line that is providing a new restoration base for the FRT, for the February steam gala and operation over Easter.

Then FR20 is booked to appear at the 2012 Railfest, the major celebration of railways for the Olympic year at the National Railway Museum in York. The locomotive is due back at Shildon in the summer.
