5643 is back in North Wales
Our wandering ambassador is tackling Berwyn bank on a regular basis at the Llangollen Railway where it is due to spend much of the rest of 2010. Twelve steaming dates are planned in August.. September steaming dates have also been posted.

FR20 is back at Locomotion, the NRM at Shildon

Sadly, our Austerity saddletank has been temporarily withdrawn from service at the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway, pending repairs to a firebox problem. More news on this when we get it!

Welcome to the award-winning official website for the Furness Railway Trust.

The FRT owns Britain's oldest working standard gauge steam locomotive, Furness Railway Number 20, GWR duo 0-6-2T 5643 and 4979 "Wootton Hall", Austerity "Cumbria" and our vintage train.

We are based in the North West of England but our locomotives and carriages are found at heritage railway sites nationwide.

FR 20 is back in the North East, but won hearts yet again as it broke new ground in East Sussex for the Bluebell Railway's 50th anniversary - the oldest working locomotive at the oldest standard gauge heritage line...
It ran the first ever passenger trains north from Kingscote for the 50th birthday gala, and hauled all-line trains as well including a photo charter.

Now the 1863 veteran is back at Locomotion - the National Railway Museum at Shildon, County Durham, where it is once more Operational Locomotive in Residence.
